Author Branding

Quick. Describe your author brand in one sentence.

When I ask this questions, I either get blank stares or someone begins to tell me their life story - where they went to school, what their favorite book was as a kid and on and on.

Your author brand is what you want to be known for, how you’re different than every other author out there. It’s how you would describe yourself at a professional networking event.

If thinking about those tasks seems overwhelming, let me break it down for you…

81% of Americans want to write a book.  That’s about 200 million people.  How do you stand out as one of 200 million people?

On a very high level - what type of book are you writing? A kids book, a romance novel, a business book, narrative non-fiction? Once you’re picked your genre you can go even deeper. Is your kids book about a BIPOC character who lives in San Francisco? Is your romance novel aimed at LGBTQ readers? Is your business book for owners of hair salons? Is your narrative non-fiction about your experience pursuing a STEM career as a woman?

Do these all sound super specific? Well, they should. Because your author brand is special.  Your author brand is you!

Creating and defining your author brand can take some time. Ask yourself the question, what do you want to be known for? Why do people remember you?
